Water Crisis in New Delhi

If you step put from one of the most luxurious residences in Delhi’s embassy area, you will find a very common scene: children and elderly men water the dusty driveway. A short rickshaw journey and people are fighting to get enough drinking water. And it is 45 degrees Celsius.

Every day, water has to be delivered to the people living in the outer parts of Delhi. Millions living in the slums are not able to access to water and sanitation services as the groundwater table is depleted. There has never been enough water for the poor, while the water shortage is a growing problem.

Fast population growth, together with a warmer climate and severe drought has led to water crises in India’s capital. The fact is, for the last five years, most of the wells have been empty. Previously there was still water for two months of the year from rainfall at least, but due to global warming the rain is almost gone now. Another biggest problem is sanitation and hygiene. There is not enough water to keep the people clean and most of the households in the slums have no toilets. They have to walk kilometres just to go to the bathroom sometimes.

Now if we step back to the luxurious residential area in New Delhi, they have swimming pools, air coolers and flushing toilets. Ironically, wealthier people waste water while the poor is struggling with clean water.

Water is essential to all human survival. It’s a pity to keep telling poor people to save water, when it is mainly the rich that should. Let’s start protecting clean water today.
