Protect Children from the Exposure of Air Pollution

People does not aware the danger of air pollution to children. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) state that there are around 93% of the world’s children under the age of 15 years breathe polluted air.

To make it worst, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General said “Polluted air is poisoning millions of children and ruining their lives.”

Pollution exposures in the first 1000 days of life and are dangerous. The first 1000 days of their first birth were critical time for children’s bodies to grow and their organ systems to develop. Yet, children are susceptible to the exposure of indoor air pollution from household such as carpets, AC, painting, heating, and sofa.

The effects of air pollution to children’s health:

  • Adverse effects on neurodevelopment that can negatively impact mental and motor development and lead to lower scores on cognitive tests.
  • Damage to lung function, even at lower levels of pollutant exposure.
  • Irregular heartbeat.
  • Aggravated asthma symptoms.
  • Increased respiratory symptoms, including airway irritation and inflammation, coughing and difficulty breathing.

As we can see from the lists above, there are many negative impacts of air pollution to our children. It can destroy their body development and their health that will impact them in the future.

In that case, we need to act from now on to reduce the daily uses of CO2 such as save energy, turning off the light when not in use, walk or cycling to the nearby store and other activities. These activities can reduce the level of air pollution for the health our posterity in the future.
