The most recent news hitting Hong Kong is probably the lead leakage of the pipes supplying water to housing estates. Some babies started to have dark spots and rashes on their bodies. Why’s it dangerous? How can it get into my house? How can I reduce it? And some other related issues will be discussed in this article.

Why is lead a problem?

Lead is a toxic metal now known to be harmful to our health if inhaled or ingested. Important sources of lead exposure include: air, soil and dust (both inside and outside the home), food, and water. It is estimated that lead in drinking water contributes to 20% or more of total lead exposure in young children. The degree of harm depends upon the level of exposure (from all sources). High levels of exposure can cause severe neurological and toxic effects or even death.
What people are more susceptible to lead’s harm?

Too much lead in the human body can cause serious damage to the brain, kidneys, nervous system, and red blood cells. You have the greatest risk, even with short term exposure, if you are a young child, or you are pregnant.

What are the sources of lead in drinking water?

Lead levels in your drinking water are likely to be highest if: your home has faucets or fittings of brass which contains some lead, or your home or water system has lead pipes, or your home has copper pipes with solder, and the house is less than five years old.
